We believe the Harena product range is the most effective and environment-friendly solution for hydrocarbon spillage control, containment and remediation, available on the market.
How our coating technology works...
Harena is a specialist range of products capable of bonding hydrocarbon molecules, including vapours, typically found in fuels and oils, isolating those contaminating molecules from the immediate surrounding environment. The Harena range consists of a variety of granulars, cushions, socks, filters and filtration systems. Bespoke solutions are also available.
The Harena range of products function differently to traditional absorbent materials that are readily available, In fact, the Harena range do not absorb at all. Instead they use a unique patented coating to mechanically bond the hydrocarbon molecule. This ensures that captured contamination will not leach and become a hazard either at source or later at disposal. The Harena product range is an environmentally friendly solution for hazardous hydrocarbon containment and control.
The Harena range is hydrocarbon specific and will only target and bond the hydrocarbon molecule. Fully hydrophobic, the range will actively repel water. This makes it suitable for effective contamination control in all weather conditions and environments. Cost to user is also reduced as only the hydrocarbon contaminated is captured.

Key features
OleophilicHarena is attracted to the hydrocarbons that occur naturally in fuels, gases and oils including synthetics. Isolating them from the immediate environment.
|
Hydrophobic
The Harena range actively repels water to enable effective capture of contaminating hydrocarbons.
|
Enviro FriendlyHarena has been Waste Criteria Tested (WAC) BS EN 12457. Harena can be recycled as a fuel, incorporated in asphalt or bioremediated via composting
|
Fire retardentOnce fully bonded hydrocarbons, our coating technology behaves like a fire retardant to reduce or prevent risk of ignition, even for highly flammable hydrocarbons such as fuels.

Disposal
Any used product should be disposed of responsibly and in accordance with environmental requirements and legislation.
Landfill
Used product has been Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) tested and classified as non-reactive due to its non-leaching feature. When disposing used product in a landfill environment, it would be a requirement to carry out further testing on any used product to be disposed in landfill, in order to achieve non-reactive disposal approval. Ordinarily, used product is disposed of as Hazardous waste.
Incineration
Unused Harena is a naturally derived and inert product. Used product containing hydrocarbon will have a high calorific value. This makes it suitable for disposal by incineration for energy production. Incineration must be carried out at an approved facility.
Composting
Due to the non-leaching feature of the product, it is possible to remediate by composting. The addition of additional bacteria will speed up the breakdown of the bonded hydrocarbon. Used product must be composted in an isolated environment. Other treatment methods such as oxidation or carbonation may also be achievable.
Recycling
Bonded hydrocarbon has the potential to be recycled, although untested at this stage. A robust enough scrubber may remove/break the product coating, allowing the controlled release of contained hydrocarbons.
